Common Mistakes That Delay a Visa Application

← Back to all guides

Most delays are not caused by anything dramatic — they come from small, avoidable errors in the paperwork. Here are the ones we see most often, and how to stay clear of them.

1. Incomplete or missing documents

Submitting an application with a document missing is the most common cause of delay. Build a checklist for your specific case and confirm every item is present before submitting.

2. Inconsistent information

Names, dates of birth and addresses must match exactly across your passport, certificates and forms. Even small differences (spelling, initials, date formats) can trigger queries.

3. Passport problems

An expired passport, too little remaining validity, or too few blank pages can stop an application before it starts. Check your passport early.

4. Missing apostille or translation

Documents that need to be apostilled or translated but are not will usually be rejected. Handle these steps early and in the right order.

5. Weak or unclear financial proof

Financial evidence that is incomplete, unexplained or inconsistent is a frequent reason for further questions. Make sure it is clear and well documented.

6. Wrong photo specifications

Photos that do not meet the required size, background or recency rules are a small but surprisingly common cause of rejection.

7. Not disclosing relevant history

Previous refusals, overstays or other history should be handled honestly and correctly. Concealing material facts can cause far bigger problems than the facts themselves.

8. Leaving everything to the last minute

Apostille, translation and third-party documents all take time. Starting late is one of the biggest self-inflicted delays.
